Service Description: This map represents US wildland-urban interface (WUI) areas in high severity forested types in 2000. The purpose of this map is to show the public the areas of land prone to wildland fire. The map shows presence/absence as 1/0. The data on the map service is determined by the intersection of housing density classes from US Census data with map of wildfire hazards using the Federal Register’s definition of WUI. The methods used to produce this layer follow the explanation in Theobald and Romme 2007. The data essentially represents where there is a high degree of urban and suburban sprawl coming into contact with forests. The data was downloaded from here. Note: Data is not shown out beyond 1:75,000,000 scale.
